Residential care is in demand as the elderly population in the U.S. continues to expand. These facilities provide care for seniors who need supervision and assistance with bathing, grooming and other daily living activities. In California, the state requires owners and administrators to receive and maintain an RCFE license to operate a facility. What Is an RCFE License? Distributed by the California Department of Social Services, an RCFE license is proof that key residential care operators have fulfilled the requirements to legally open and manage an assisted living facility. This type of license also protects the public by providing a way for the state to track, regulate and monitor these locations. How Do You Apply for RCFE Licensure? Whether you want to own a center or begin a career as an RCFE administrator, you can obtain your license by doing the following. 1. Complete a Training Course Preparing for the exam begins with completing an online or in-person state-approved training course. This will teach you the rules and regulations you need to follow. 2. Take the RCFE Exam and Pass It Within 60 days of finishing the course, you must register and take the exam. To pass, a score of 70% or higher is required. 3. Submit an Application Package After being notified that you passed the exam, you'll submit an application package. Once approved, your license will be sent to you. Acquiring an RCFE license is the first step to running an assisted living center in California. It also provides you with the foundation and knowledge necessary to operate a successful facility.
