If you like caring for the elderly and are interested in working in an assisted living facility, you may need to meet certain education requirements. Individuals who will be in contact with medication or working with residents who take medication on a regular basis may have to complete medication training as part of the assisted living education curriculum.
Training Curriculum Medication training can include general medication awareness which can be an overview of things to be aware of and rules to follow in assisted living facilities when residents are administering medications themselves or when staff have taken responsibility for a resident’s medication. Some courses may cover laws and rules for safely handling different types of medications, including controlled substances, and may also cover rules for storage and disposal of medications. Medication training, as part of assisted living education can also cover topics on administering medication as well as aiding residents who self-administer medications. There can be courses that teach managers how to assess staff competencies to determine if they are suited to administer medication, as well as courses to teach staff how to administer medications, time the doses, administer control substances and book medicines in and out. There may also be courses that teach students how to ensure that the correct dose of medicine is given to the correct person, at the correct time, and in the right manner (orally, topically, etc.).
