A Residential Care Facility for the Elderly, otherwise known as an RCFE, is an alternative form of assisted living for those who are 60 years or older that can no longer live independently. These facilities are ideal for residents who might require some assistance completing daily tasks, but do not require 24 hour supervision.
Contrary to popular belief, RCFEs are not medical facilities. While all the RCFE administrator and the facility's staff members are all required to have RCFE certifications, they are not registered nurses. As such, these facilities often have restrictions regarding which types of residents they are able to accept. Likewise, if a current resident's medical needs increase over time, they may be required to relocate to a hospice facility that can provide more adequate care for them. An RCFE administrator ensures that staff members are available around the clock to enhance your loved one's quality of life. The facility provides several services, including regular meals, personal care and supervision (when necessary), medication dispensation, housekeeping, assistance with daily activities, entertainment and much more. Depending on the facility, residents may have private or shared rooms. In California, RCFEs are regulated by the Department of Social Services. Facilities are routinely inspected every five years, and the results of these inspections are compiled into documents known as surveys. The inspection system isn't always thorough, so you should take the time to do your own research prior to selecting a facility. Selecting the correct assisted living facility for your loved one requires a lot of research. Family members should take the time to tour lots of different facilities and ask lots of questions. Make sure that you ask for each facility's caregiver to resident ratio, most recent inspection survey and a list of common resident complaints. If you have a loved one that requires some degree of living assistance, but still wants to maintain a feeling of independence, then relocating to an RCFE might be the correct course of action.
