There are typically many factors that go into opening a residential care facility for the elderly. Some of these factors may include RCFE certification training, hiring a qualified staff and knowing where you will open it. Here are a few tips on how to open a facility for the elderly.
What Kind of Facility Do You Want? Unbeknownst to some individuals, there is usually more than one type of residential care facility. There are assisted living facilities and residential board facilities otherwise known as care facilities. Assisted living facilities are typically managed complexes or apartments that allow individuals to have an independent living environment. On the other hand is a residential board facility. Residential board facilities are often similar to assisted living facilities but typically offer more personal services. This may include helping individuals who need assistance get dressed, dine or tend to additional hygiene needs. Once you know the difference between these two facilities, you can decide which type you want to open and how to proceed from there. Where Will You Open Your Facility? Location is typically an important part of opening any facility. It may be advisable to buy or rent a plot of land that has enough space for your needs and maybe some extra room to expand. You may want to make sure that your facility meets state and government regulations. Before you can get your permit to open for business, you typically have to get an inspection, ensuring that your facility meets standards of fire safety. In addition, you may be expected to have grab bars in your restrooms, by toilets and by showers to help prevent falls. How Do You Get Qualified? In order to be qualified to open a facility, you typically have to go through RCFE certification training. This may include 40 or more hours of training. Depending on where you live, you may also have ongoing training or a refresher course every two years. Regardless of which of these scenarios apply to your situation, you will most likely need to go through extensive training before you can get your license. Who Do You Hire? Once you obtain a license, you will most likely need to get a staff. While there is not a specific number of staff members you are required to have, one person needs to be available to help residents at all times. It may benefit you to have more help than that. Because of the sensitive nature of this job, it is typically important to make sure each member of your staff gets a background check. Overall, opening a facility and receiving RCFE certification training can be made simpler by following these tips. Before long, you may be able to open for business.
