If you are motivated by helping others and value your community elders, this discussion may provide some direction. Assisted living is a residential elder care model for seniors who can generally live independently with few significant medical needs. California certifies individuals interested in residential care for elders. The RCFE certification program may be a good fit for you if you have management skills and want to work in a field that benefits seniors.
The Role of an Assisted Living Administrator Residential care facilities for the elderly are designed around activities and community interaction. Many provide light assistance with personal care. Most facilities dispense medication, but full-time medical staff is not on site. The administrator would oversee all staff and daily operations, including direct patient services, marketing, rehabilitation management and programming. The administrator’s mission is to design systems that meet the full range of resident needs. Overview of Administrator Training To qualify for RCFE certification, you must be at least 21 years old and have a GED or college diploma. Training for new staff consists of 80 hours of instruction. Programs differ to some extent, but a common format is six days of live coursework and a 20-hours of online units. The certification is generally broken into modules on topics such as dementia care, harm prevention, regulatory compliance, psychology and medication. Some programs offer special modules on LGBT and diversity sensitivity as well as marijuana use in care facilities. The course is designed to prepare students for the state exam, which is needed to complete certification. Each year, to maintain the license, 20-hours of continuing education are required. Program costs can vary between training locations. The 80-hour basic training generally costs approximately $800. The license application fees can vary widely from several hundred to over $1000, depending on the facility type and size. If your skills and goals are a match for a career in eldercare, RCFE certification is a good place to start. In a relatively short period of time, you can complete the 80-hour training and become certified for a rewarding career, making a difference for the elders in your community.
