There are several steps required of people who want to become certification administrators. First, a person needs to obtain RCFE administrator certification from a reputable source. This requires taking classes and acquiring hands-on experience in a residential care facility. Before certification is granted, a person needs to have a certain number hours actually training at a facility.
Once the certification is acquired, the person needs to pass a state exam. This test usually needs to be taken within a set amount of time. In California, a person has 60 days to take the exam upon obtaining certification. You need to get at least a 70 percent on the exam to pass. You should hear back in about one week about whether you passed or failed. However, if you do not hear anything in 14 days, then you should contact the department to see what is going on. In the event you fail the test, you can retake it. However, if you pass the test, then there is still work that needs to be done to acquire your RCFE administrator certification. Within 30 days of passing, you need to submit an administrator application packet. This involves sending in paperwork to the department, and it should include a copy of your Application for Administrator Certification form, a copy of the extension approval letter, a copy of the letter you received when you passed the exam and a money order worth $100. You can send in a check, and it should be made out to the California Department of Social Services. You usually have three chances to pass the state exam if you do not pass the first time. When all's said and done, you should be able to acquire RCFE administrator certification within a year of starting.
