Placing the elderly into assisted-living situations is often not only a difficult decision, but also a necessary one. There are a number of regulations in place to make these institutions healthy places to live, but some advocates are concerned that those facilities don’t have the equipment or training to give their residents the specific care they need. Here’s why even employees who have gone through RCFE staff training can have a difficult time fulfilling their job requirements due to regulations.
The law differs by state, but a specific ratio of staffers to residents is often required during the different shifts. In California, only one employee on call is required for night shifts at facilities with fifteen beds or less, and with sixteen to one hundred beds, they require one employee with another on call. It can be difficult to imagine how only one or two staffers, including those who have been educated through RCFE staff training, can manage to care for that many residents. The facilities are able to determine the number of staffers for daytime shifts. While this can leave room for inadequate supervision, facilities also have the option to shift the number of staff members as needed. Nursing homes have stricter ratios, but adding more employees to assisted-living facilities can cause price increases, making it difficult for residents and their families to afford care. A number of problems can arise when residents aren’t given the attention they need. Those with dementia or other medical issues can be a danger to themselves or others, and when they exhibit problematic behavior, they can be given medication that may not be the most beneficial to them. According to the California State Legislation, a manager or administrator must be present at the facility at all hours, but staffing ratios remain unspecified, leaving room for facilities to be under-staffed. Even when employees have gone through RCFE staff training and know how to properly care for residents, there is no guarantee they will be given a manageable number to supervise.
