Residential care facilities for the elderly, including assisted living, memory care, and continuing care retirement communities, are essential to the aging population in California. These locations provide around the clock care for older adults who need assistance but do not need constant nursing care. While obtaining an RCFE license is a rigorous process, it is still important that you read up on the available options before deciding which would be a good fit for your aging relatives.
How Many RCFEs Are There? California has over 7,400 facilities with an RCFE license that can provide a home and care for almost 200,000 residents. In the state, only a small percentage of licensed facilities can take care of 16 or more residents. The majorities of RCFEs are small facilities designed to take care of no more than 15 residents. Of all communities, only 600 facilities are members of the California Assisted Living Association, a group designed to ensure quality service and care in RCFEs. They do this by providing facilities with resources and tools, educating staff, and advocating for residents. What Do Residents Think? Recently CALA commissioned a study of the facilities in the state. This study revealed that an overwhelming number of residents in these facilities were pleased with the care they received. For instance, over 95 percent of residents said that staff was friendly, they were comfortable with the people who work and live there, they feel safe, and they receive the help they need while still getting the privacy they want. In other words, the residents' needs were met by respectful and caring staff. If you are looking to put your relatives in a safe place, look for one that is a member of CALA, so you know steps are being taken to make them more comfortable. With thousands of residential care facilities in California, finding the right one for your aging relatives can be a challenge. However, the best ones will provide residents with a high quality of living, meet their needs with friendly staff, and be a member of CALA.
